Dr. Freddie Smith

Senior Pastor

Freddie Smith, a native of Waycross, GA, is pastor of Sweat Memorial Baptist Church. He is married to Vera Smith and has four children; Scott, Steven, Blake and Erica. They are blessed with eight grandchildren.

Freddie Smith first began pastoring in Georgia. He then moved to Florida where he pastored two church for 27 years (Central Baptist in Sanford, Florida, and First Baptist in Naples, Florida). He has pastored at Sweat Memorial Baptist Church for the past 18 years. In 2011, he was honored for faithfully preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ for fifty years.

The Lord has led him to preach in many foreign countries, church revivals and area wide crusades. He has served on Southern Baptist Convention committees and associations. He was elected president of the Florida Baptist Pastor’s Conference.

In talking to our pastor, you will quickly hear him give God glory for the great happenings in the life and ministry of our church. He believes the Bible to be God’s complete Word and authority in all matters of a Christian’s life.


James Perry

Minister of Music

James Perry came to Sweat Memorial Baptist in June of 1987 and serves as Minister of Music and Senior Adults.  He previously served at Second Baptist in Waycross, Bethsaida Baptist in Dublin, Ga., and Comer Baptist in Comer, Ga.  James graduated from the University of Georgia in 1975 with a Bachelor of Music and in 1976 with a Master of Music Education.

James is married to Nancy Taylor Perry. They were married in November, 1982. They have two children, Sarah Tatum (husband Brent) and Jim. They have a granddaughter, Isabelle Tatum and a grandson, Camp Tatum.

James is a member of the Georgia Baptist “Sons of Jubal” and performs with and conducts various community and area musical ensembles.


Nancy Perry

Director of Children's Ministries

Nancy Perry joined Sweat Memorial Baptist Church in June of 1987.  She has taught Sunday School, Children’s Choirs, and worked in a wide range of children’s activities since becoming a part of the church.

Nancy became Children’s Ministry Coordinator at SMBC in October of 2003. In this capacity she plans, coordinates and supervises activities for children ages birth through grade 6. Children at Sweat Memorial are involved in Children’s Church, Junior Church, Children’s Choirs, Awana, Sunday School, Vacation Bible Schools and other activities.

Nancy recently retired from USDA Rural Development, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

She has been married to her husband James for 30 years. They have a daughter Sarah Tatum, son in law Brent Tatum, granddaughter Isabelle Tatum,  grandson Camp Tatum and son Jim.


Scott Ray

Minister of Youth

Scott Ray serves in a bi-vocational capacity as Minister of Youth at SMBC. He has served in that position since October 2009. Scott’s emphasis is seeing that the Youth of SMBC have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, as well as encouraging them to be a “shining light” to those around them. Since being called into youth ministry at the age of twenty-two, Scott has always had a passion and a burden to see the next generation come to a life-changing encounter with their heavenly father by growing in a relationship with Him, as well as being empowered to serve in His Name.

The Youth are active in FCA, Vacation Bible School, Rebuilding Waycross, youth camp, and various mission outreach opportunities.

Scott is also an agent for South Georgia Insurance Services. In December 2005, he married Jeri Nolte Ray. In March 2008, they were blessed with twins, Jackson and Olivia.
